In the spiritual tapestry of India's Bhakti Movement, one name shines brightest when it comes to devotion to Lord Rama—Goswami Tulsidas. He was the divine saint-poet who broke the barriers of classical Sanskrit and brought the sacred story of Lord Rama into the courtyards and hearts of everyday people through the immortal 'Ramcharitmanas'.

Celebrated every year on Shravan Shukla Saptami, Tulsidas Jayanti falls on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

Here is the captivating story of human attachment, awakening, and divine vision that transformed Tulsidas into a legend.

🐍 1. The Turning Point: The Words That Sparked Renunciation

In his early life, Tulsidas was deeply attached to his wife, Ratnavali. Unable to bear even a short separation when she visited her parents, he set out in a stormy night, crossing a flooded river using a floating corpse as a log and scaling her balcony using a venomous snake mistaken for a rope.

Shocked by his blind infatuation, Ratnavali gave him a historic rebuke in verse:

"Had you placed even half the love and longing you have for this fragile body of flesh and bone toward Lord Rama, you would have crossed the ocean of worldly existence."

Those words struck Tulsidas like lightning. In that very fraction of a second, his worldly illusions shattered. He walked away from family life forever, dedicating every breath to Lord Rama.

🐒 2. Encounter with Hanuman and the Vision at Chitrakoot

While reciting the Ramayana on the ghats of Varanasi, Tulsidas discovered that Lord Hanuman attended his sessions disguised as an old leper. Touching his feet, Tulsidas begged for a vision of Lord Rama.

Hanuman directed him to the sacred forests of Chitrakoot. There, while grinding sandalwood paste on the riverbank, two radiant young princes appeared before him, asking for a tilak. Mesmerized by their divine aura, Tulsidas froze. To awaken him, Hanuman took the form of a parrot and recited the famous couplet:

"Chitrakoot ke ghaat par, bhai santan ki bheer,

Tulsidas chandan ghise, tilak det Raghubeer."

Lord Rama smiled, applied the tilak on Tulsidas’s forehead, and blessed him with eternal peace.

📖 3. Timeless Literary Legacy

Tulsidas gave humanity some of the greatest spiritual treasures:

  • Shri Ramcharitmanas: The epic of Lord Rama written in the accessible Awadhi language.

  • Hanuman Chalisa: The iconic 40-verse hymn chanted by millions daily for strength, peace, and protection.

  • Vinay Patrika & Kavitavali: Deeply moving hymns of surrender and philosophy.

🎯 Author's Take

Goswami Tulsidas’s journey proves that human flaws can be converted into spiritual gold once our focus shifts from worldly attachment to unconditional devotion. Observing Tulsidas Jayanti is an opportunity to imbibe his humility, faith, and discipline.
