He is not heavy, he is my brother

The dark day of 1945, when a nuclear attack took place on Nagasaki, Japan, is one of the most painful events in human history.

This bombing on 9 August 1945 not only reduced a city to ashes, but also left permanent scars on countless families, innocent children and human relationships.

A picture taken amidst that destruction is still considered a symbol of humanity and brotherhood. This picture is of a boy of about 10 years. His younger brother was tied to his back, who was no longer in this world. That child was standing quietly, waiting for his turn so that he could perform the last rites of his brother.

When a soldier saw him, he was surprised. He softly told the child—

“You look very tired, put him on the ground.”

But the answer that the innocent gave melted the heart of every listener. He said—

“He is not heavy… he is my brother.”

That one sentence taught the whole world that the burden of relationships, love and responsibility is never heavy.

Since then, this picture and this sentence have become a symbol of unity, brotherhood and sacrifice not only in Japan but in the whole world.

What should we learn from this?

  • If your brother or sister falls, pick him up.
  • If a friend is tired, hold his hand and lead him forward.
  • If someone makes a mistake, forgive him.
  • If he is weak, take care of him.
  • And even if the whole world abandons him, take him on your shoulders.

Because he is not heavy…

  • He is your brother,
  • He is your sister,
  • He is your family.

This is the true meaning of friendship and relationships—

No matter how difficult the circumstances are, we should never leave each other.
