Somnath Temple: New '3D Immersive Museum' to Showcase the Glory of 12 Jyotirlingas

Veraval (Gujarat), January 9, 2026: The holy shrine of Shree Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, is set to undergo a digital transformation. To commemorate the 'Somnath Swabhiman Parv' (1026–2026), the Somnath Trust has announced the development of a state-of-the-art '3D Immersive Museum'. This museum will serve as a digital bridge, connecting devotees to the 1,000-year-old saga of the temple’s resilience and the divine stories of all 12 Jyotirlingas.

Technological Innovations

The museum is designed to offer a world-class spiritual experience through:

  1. Holograms & Virtual Reality (VR): Using VR headsets, pilgrims can take a digital tour of the ancient temple structures as described in the Rig Veda and Shiva Purana.

  2. The 12 Jyotirlinga Circuit: A dedicated zone will use 3D projection mapping to narrate the origin and spiritual significance of each of the 12 Jyotirlingas, from Kedarnath in the North to Rameshwaram in the South.

  3. Saga of Resilience: The museum will vividly depict the historical timeline, from the invasion of 1026 AD to the modern reconstruction led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1951.

Significance of 2026

The year 2026 marks a civilisational milestone for Somnath. It observes 1,000 years of the temple's indomitable spirit since the first major destruction and 75 years since the inauguration of the current seventh structure.

A new experience for devotees

According to the Somnath Trust, the aim of this high-tech museum is to introduce the younger generation to the glorious history and architectural style (Kailas Mahameru Prasad Style) of Sanatan Dharma. Along with the museum, a 'smart digital plaza' is also being built, where devotees will have access to all the information related to the temple at their fingertips.
