Haridwar/Rishikesh: According to the Hindu calendar, following the conclusion of Chaitra Purnima (Hanuman Jayanti), the exceptionally holy month of 'Vaishakh' has commenced. As stated in the Skanda Purana: "Na Vaishakha Samo Maso, Na Satyena Samam Yugam"—which translates to "There is no month like Vaishakh, just as there is no era like Satyayuga." This month is regarded as the most auspicious period for the worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Parshuram.
During the month of Vaishakh, the intensity of the Sun begins to rise, and the heat moves toward its peak. In such conditions, 'Jal Daan' (the donation of water) is categorized as a 'Mahadaan' (Great Charity) in the scriptures.
According to the Puranas: The scriptures state that a person who provides water to the thirsty in Vaishakh earns merit equivalent to performing an Ashwamedha Yajna. Lord Vishnu himself resides in the form of water; therefore, setting up water stalls (Pyau) for travelers or placing water bowls for birds and animals is considered direct service to God.
Freedom from Pitru Dosh: Donating water in Vaishakh satisfies one's ancestors (Pitrus). If there is Pitru Dosh or mental unrest in one's horoscope, donating an earthen pot (matka) is believed to be highly fruitful.
Scientific Perspective: In the rising heat, keeping the body hydrated and maintaining water sources in nature is essential for the survival of all living beings. This charity is not just religious but also a significant social responsibility.
Donation of Earthen Pots: In modern times, donating an earthen pot filled with cool water to a temple or a public place is a great service.
Worship of the Peepal Tree: Offering water to the Peepal tree in Vaishakh invokes the blessings of the holy trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.
Sattu and Seasonal Fruits: Donating items with cooling properties, such as Sattu (roasted gram flour), muskmelons, and mangoes, is considered very auspicious this month.
Abhishek of Lord Vishnu: Offer Tulsi leaves daily while chanting the mantra: "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya."
Holy River Bath: If possible, take a bath in a sacred river. This is believed to cleanse the sins accumulated throughout the year.
