Kanwar Yatra 2026 Route Update: Major Decision Issued! Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Closed; Check New Route Plan & Guidelines

As the holy month of Sawan (Shravan) begins, preparations for the grand Kanwar Yatra are in full swing across Northern India. To manage the massive influx of millions of Lord Shiva devotees (Kanwariyas) and ensure seamless traffic flow, joint administrative decisions have been issued by the Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi authorities.

If you or anyone in your family is planning to collect sacred Gangajal from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Neelkanth this year, here is the essential breakdown of the new route plan, expressway restrictions, and key safety guidelines.

🚫 Kanwar Yatra Restricted on Delhi-Dehradun Expressway

In a major administrative decision, Kanwar Yatra movement has been restricted on the newly constructed Delhi-Dehradun Expressway.

  • Neither foot pilgrims (pedestrian Kanwariyas) nor vehicles participating in Dak Kanwar will be permitted to use the expressway.

  • This measure has been implemented to avoid high-speed traffic conflicts and prevent accidents. The expressway will remain open exclusively for general vehicular traffic.

🛣️ Designated Route Plan for Pilgrims

To facilitate a smooth journey, dedicated routes have been mapped out for different categories of devotees:

  1. Pedestrian Kanwariyas (On Foot): Devotees returning on foot from Haridwar toward Delhi/UP are instructed to use the Upper Ganga Canal Route (Upper Ganga Canal Road).

  2. Dak Kanwar & Heavy Vehicles: Dak Kanwar vehicles and heavy transport will be routed via the traditional Delhi-Haridwar National Highway (NH-34) and the Haridwar-Bijnor Route.

  3. Rishikesh & Neelkanth Route: Large vehicles arriving in Rishikesh will be directed to the IDPL parking area. From there, devotees can proceed via Garud Chatti to reach the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple.

📑 Key Guidelines & Rules for Kanwar Yatra 2026

To prevent any inconvenience during the pilgrimage, authorities have issued the following mandatory directives:

  • Valid Photo ID Mandatory: Every devotee entering the Uttarakhand border must carry a valid government-issued ID card (such as an Aadhar Card).

  • Ban on Sharp Objects & Oversized Tridents: Carrying oversized tridents (Trishul), spears, or any sharp/pointed objects on the Kanwar is strictly prohibited.

  • Sound & DJ Regulations: Height restrictions and permissible noise levels for DJ sound systems will be strictly enforced along the route.
