Rudraprayag/Kedarnath: With less than two weeks remaining for the opening of the portals of Kedarnath Dham, the weather at the Himalayan shrine has taken a dramatic turn. Fresh snowfall over the last 24 to 48 hours at Kedarnath Dham and along the trekking route has intensified challenges for the administration and agencies involved in Yatra preparations.
To ensure the safety of devotees before the portals open on April 22, the Uttarakhand Government and local administration have issued a fresh advisory.
Linchauli and Bhairav Ghadera: Due to the fresh spell of snow, 3 to 4 feet of snow has once again accumulated on the trekking paths in sensitive areas like Linchauli and Bhairav Ghadera.
Snow Clearance Operations: The administration has deployed two teams consisting of over 60 workers who are working on a war footing to clear the path. However, intermittent snowfall continues to hinder the operations.
The administration has issued the following guidelines for travelers:
Check Weather Updates Constantly: Before commencing your journey to Kedarnath, must check the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). If there is a heavy snowfall alert, it is safer to halt at Rishikesh or Sonprayag.
Special Arrangements for Warm Clothing: Temperatures at the Dham are plummeting below freezing (reaching -5°C). Ensure you carry heavy jackets, thermal wear, gloves, and waterproof shoes.
Mandatory Health Check-up: Oxygen depletion at high altitudes combined with extreme cold can cause distress to respiratory patients. Ensure you obtain a medical fitness certificate before starting the journey.
Registration Status: Due to heavy snowfall, the number of daily pilgrims allowed for darshan may be regulated. Ensure that your registration is confirmed.
Kedarnath Opening Ceremony: April 22, 2026, at 08:00 AM.
Doli Departure: The Panchmukhi Doli of Lord Kedarnath will depart from Ukhimath on April 18.
"If you are traveling with children or the elderly, consider planning your visit in mid-May instead of the opening weeks (late April), as the weather tends to become more stable by then."
