Tungnath Temple: ASI Launches Mission to Save the World's Highest Shiva Shrine from Tilting

Rudraprayag (Uttarakhand), January 9, 2026: Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas at an altitude of 12,070 feet, the world's highest Shiva temple, Tungnath, is undergoing a massive conservation mission led by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Following recent scientific reports confirming a 5 to 6-degree tilt in the main structure and the displacement of several stones, a specialized project to reinforce the foundation and initiate 'chemical cleaning' has officially begun today.

Significance and Threats: Why Conservation is Critical?

As one of the sacred Panch Kedar temples, Tungnath is over a thousand years old and stands as a masterpiece of the Katyuri style of architecture. Preserving this shrine is a formidable challenge due to several factors:

  • Environmental Impact: Extreme snowfall and freezing temperatures have led to fissures in the stones and the growth of moss and lichen.

  • Geological Shifts: Subtle tectonic movements in the Himalayan region have caused the temple structure to lean toward one side.

  • Stone Erosion: To maintain the strength and luster of the ancient stones, a protective 'chemical coating' is essential to shield them from acid rain and moisture.

The ASI Action Plan 2026

A dedicated team of ASI experts has reached the temple complex to execute the following conservation steps:

  1. Chemical Cleaning: Specialized non-corrosive chemicals are being used to remove deep-seated moss and the effects of environmental pollution from the exterior walls.

  2. Grouting Technique: To arrest the tilt, the gaps discovered within the temple's foundation are being filled with high-strength bonding materials (Grouting). This will stabilize the base without altering the original structure.

  3. Digital Monitoring: High-precision 'Tilt Sensors' have been installed on the temple walls. These sensors will provide monthly data reports to monitor even the slightest shift in the alignment.

Travel Advisory

If you are planning to visit Tungnath in 2026, please note that access to the temple's inner sanctum may be restricted due to restoration work. The 4 km trekking route from Chopta is open.

The Pride of Panch Kedar

According to legends, the Tungnath temple was built by the Pandavas to appease Lord Shiva. Beyond its immense spiritual value, the temple is a world-renowned destination for trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The temple administration has clarified that while the restoration is underway, darshan (worship) services will remain smooth for pilgrims. However, certain restrictions may be placed near the main sanctum to ensure public safety and the integrity of the conservation work.
