Located along the banks of the Yamuna river in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, Bateshwar Dham—often revered as Mini Kashi—is currently immersed in profound devotion.
During the holy month of Shravan (Sawan), the annual Bateshwar Sawan Mela draws hundreds of thousands of Kanwariyas (pilgrims carrying holy water) from across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan to perform Jalabhishek on the sacred Shivlings.
The Crescent Chain of 101 Shiva Temples The defining marvel of Bateshwar Dham is its continuous semi-circular stretch of 101 Shiva temples lining the ghats of the Yamuna.
Architectural Marvel: Built by the Bhadauria rulers centuries ago, each temple features intricate stone carvings and individual Shivlings.
Spiritual Significance: Visiting all 101 temples in one single circumambulation (Parikrama) is believed to bestow blessings equivalent to visiting major Jyotirlingas.
The Miracle of the Crescent Yamuna River At Bateshwar, the river Yamuna uniquely curves into a deep crescent and flows backward (south to north) instead of its usual eastward flow. According to legend, the river altered its natural course specifically to touch the feet of the presiding deity, Lord Bateshwar Nath Mahadev.
Kanwar Yatra and Local Sawan Fair Throughout Sawan, especially on Somwar (Mondays), Kanwariyas complete their pilgrimage by carrying holy water over long distances on foot to bathe Baba Bateshwar Nath. The ongoing Sawan fair provides a vibrant cultural backdrop with spiritual discourses, traditional music, and local delicacies.
It is on this final Monday of Sawan that Kanwariyas (pilgrims carrying holy water) perform the main and concluding collective Jalabhishek (ritual offering of water) at Bateshwar Dham and across the surrounding region (Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Bhind, and Morena). The Kanwar Yatra concludes on this day, which also sees the largest influx of crowds at the Sawan fair.
Final Monday and Conclusion: The main and final Jalabhishek of this sacred fair and *Kanwar Yatra* will take place on August 24, 2026 (the last Monday of Sawan).
Purnahuti (Culmination): On this day, hundreds of thousands of Kanwariyas arriving from far and wide will offer the holy water of the Ganges —carried in their Kanwars—to Lord Bateshwar Nath, thereby reaping the full spiritual rewards of their vow and pilgrimage.
Author's Take Bateshwar Dham stands as a living testament to Sanatan architecture and unwavering devotion. A visit to these 101 riverbank shrines during Sawan offers a deeply peaceful and spiritually elevating experience.
