Masaan Ki Holi in Kashi: Why is Holi Played with Pyre Ashes Amidst Burning Dead Bodies?

Varanasi (Kashi): While the entire world celebrates Holi with vibrant colors and joy, the city of liberation, Kashi, witnesses a form of Holi that reflects the eternal truth of life and death. This is known as 'Masaan Ki Holi'. Played amidst the blazing pyres at the Manikarnika Ghat, this Holi is not just a festival but a symbol of Lord Shiva's Aghor penance and his boundless love for all beings.

1. The Legend: Baba Vishwanath’s Gauna and the Spirits of the Crematorium

According to mythological beliefs, on the day of Rangbharni Ekadashi, Lord Vishwanath returned to Kashi after the Gauna (the formal homecoming ceremony of a bride) of Goddess Parvati. On that day, he played Holi with gulal along with his devotees.

  • The Left-behind Devotees: Lord Shiva’s Ganas (followers) also include ghosts, spirits, ghouls, and Aghoris. It is believed that they could not participate in the mainstream welcoming celebrations of the Lord.

  • Mahadev’s Love: To please these unique devotees, Mahadev arrives at the 'Mahashmashan' (the great cremation ground at Manikarnika Ghat) the very next day to play Holi with them. Since conventional colors are not found there, the 'Bhasma' (ashes) of the pyres becomes their color.

2. Holi with Pyre Ashes: A Celebration of Life and Death

In Masaan Ki Holi, ashes from burning pyres are used alongside abir and gulal. Amidst the echoing sound of Damrus, chants of 'Har Har Mahadev', and the smoke rising from the pyres, saints, ascetics, and locals immerse themselves in this unique celebration.

  • The Philosophy: This Holi teaches that death is not something to be feared but is merely a stage of life. It signifies that Mahadev, despite being the Lord of Death, is also the presiding deity of celebration.

3. When and Where Does This Holi Take Place?

  • Date: The day immediately following Rangbharni Ekadashi (this year, February 28, 2026).

  • Location: Manikarnika Ghat (Mahashmashan), Varanasi.

  • Time: During the afternoon, following the special Aarti and worship of Baba Masaan Nath.

4. An Attraction for Tourists Worldwide

Today, this Holi is no longer limited to Aghoris. Photographers and tourists from across the globe reach Kashi to witness this extraordinary and hair-raising sight. Faces smeared with ash and devotees dancing to the rhythm of spiritual music create an atmosphere that is possible only in Kashi.
