Varanasi/Prayagraj: According to the Hindu Panchang, the Amavasya (New Moon day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Magh is known as 'Mauni Amavasya.' It is considered the most spiritually fruitfull of all Amavasya days throughout the year. For 2026, there has been some confusion among devotees whether it falls on Sunday or Monday.
According to prominent astrologers and the lunar calendar, Mauni Amavasya will be observed on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
The timings for the Magh Amavasya Tithi are as follows:
Amavasya Tithi Begins: January 17, 2026, at 09:34 PM.
Amavasya Tithi Ends: January 18, 2026, at 08:25 PM.
Udaya Tithi: Since the Amavasya Tithi is prevailing at the time of sunrise on January 18, the fast (Vrat) and the holy bath-charity rituals will be performed on Sunday, January 18.
Taking a holy dip in sacred rivers, especially at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, holds immense significance on this day.
Amrit Kaal (Best Timings): 07:15 AM to 08:30 AM.
Brahma Muhurta: 05:27 AM to 06:21 AM.
Abhijit Muhurat: 12:10 PM to 12:53 PM.
Mauni Amavasya is an exceptionally auspicious day to perform rituals for the peace of ancestors (Pitru). The afternoon period is considered ideal for Tarpan and Shradh:
Kutup Kaal: 11:50 AM to 12:45 PM.
Rauhin Kaal: 12:45 PM to 01:35 PM.
Aparahna Kaal: 01:35 PM to 03:50 PM (This is the most recommended window for offering water/Tarpan to ancestors).
The day is named 'Mauni' Amavasya because it is a tradition to emulate the conduct of ancient Sages (Munis).
The Vow of Silence: According to the scriptures, practicing a 'Maun Vrat' (vow of silence) on this day helps in increasing willpower and attaining deep mental peace by controlling one's speech.
What to Donate? Devotees should donate sesame seeds (Til), jaggery, warm clothes, ghee, and food grains. It is believed that charity performed on Magh Amavasya yields merits equivalent to performing an 'Ashwamedha Yagya.'
