Amarnath Yatra 2026 Commences: First Batch Departs for Baba Barfani Darshan; Check Essential Rules and Routes

Amarnath Yatra 2026 Today Update: The most sacred time of the year for Lord Shiva devotees has finally arrived. Starting today, July 02, 2026, the holy Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra has officially commenced. The first batch of pilgrims from across the country has departed from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu amid tight security, heading toward the Baltal and Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camps in Kashmir.

This year, the divine pilgrimage to Baba Barfani will span 57 days, concluding on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan (Shravan Purnima). If you are planning to undertake this sacred journey this year, here is everything you need to know about the routes, guidelines, and registration.

The Two Main Routes for Amarnath Yatra 2026

Pilgrims can choose between two primary trekking routes to reach the holy Amarnath Cave, depending on their health condition and time availability:

  1. The Pahalgam Route (The Traditional Path): This is the oldest and most preferred route for the pilgrimage. After reaching Pahalgam (Nunwan Base Camp) from Jammu, it takes about 3 to 4 days of trekking to reach the holy cave. While this path is longer, the incline is relatively gradual and easier compared to Baltal.

  2. The Baltal Route (The Shorter Path): If you are short on time, the Baltal route in Ganderbal district is the quickest option. The distance from the Baltal base camp to the holy cave is just 14 kilometers, allowing devotees to complete the darshan and return within a single day. However, be prepared as this track is exceptionally steep and physically demanding.

Essential Government Guidelines and Safety Rules

The administration has put strict health and security measures in place this year. Keep these crucial points in mind before setting out:

  • Mandatory Health Certificate & RFID Tags: No pilgrim will be allowed beyond the base camps without a valid Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) and biometric registration. For real-time tracking and security, every pilgrim is being issued an RFID tag, which must be worn around the neck at all times.

  • Unpredictable Weather: Mountain weather can change within minutes. It is highly recommended to carry adequate warm clothing, a reliable raincoat, waterproof trekking shoes, and a small flashlight.

  • Acclimatization and Health: The Amarnath Cave is located at an altitude of approximately 14,000 feet, where oxygen levels drop significantly. Keep yourself well-hydrated, take steady breaks, and maintain a slow, consistent pace while climbing.

Spiritual Significance of Baba Barfani

The holy Amarnath Cave holds an exalted status in Hinduism. According to Vedic mythology, this is the mystical cavern where Lord Shiva narrated the secrets of immortality (the Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati. To ensure total secrecy, Mahadev chose this isolated cave deep in the Himalayas. It is believed that a pair of pigeons overheard the narration and became immortal; many pilgrims claim to still see them inside the cave. The unique ice stalagmite (Shivalingam) forms naturally here every year, waxing and waning with the phases of the moon.
