According to the holy Puranas, broken by grief after his consort Sati immolated herself at her father’s sacrificial fire, Lord Shiva carried her lifeless body on his shoulders and wandered across the universe in a state of cosmic sorrow. To save the cosmos from Shiva's destructive grief, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to cut Sati's body into pieces, which fell across various parts of the Indian subcontinent.
The Sacred Fall: It is firmly believed that Goddess Sati’s knees (or Guhya, representing the secret parts/lower abdomen in some esoteric texts) fell at the exact spot where the Guhyeshwari Temple stands today.
