Delhi to Dehradun in Just 2.5 Hours! New Expressway Becomes a 'Boon' for Char Dham Pilgrims

New Delhi/Dehradun: Just before the commencement of the Char Dham Yatra 2026, wonderful news has arrived for devotees. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, built at a cost of ₹12,000 crore, on April 14, 2026. This expressway will not only bridge the distance between Delhi and Uttarakhand but will also prove to be a "boon" for the millions of pilgrims heading for the Char Dham yatra this year.

A 5-Hour Journey Now in Just 150 Minutes

Until now, reaching Dehradun from Delhi took 5 to 6 hours due to heavy traffic and congestion. However, with the opening of this 213-kilometer-long, 6-lane expressway, this distance can now be covered in just 2.5 hours.

How Will Char Dham Pilgrims Benefit?

  1. Less Fatigue, More Devotion: Devotees can now leave Delhi-NCR in the morning and reach Haridwar or Rishikesh by noon. This reduces travel fatigue and provides more time for darshan and rituals.

  2. Seamless Connectivity: This route connects directly to the Char Dham Highway, ensuring that travelers heading to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath do not face traffic jams while passing through cities like Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

  3. Safer Travel: The expressway is equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), making the journey significantly safer for families.

Asia’s Longest 'Wildlife Corridor'

The most striking feature of this expressway is the 12-kilometer-long elevated wildlife corridor passing over Rajaji National Park. This is the longest corridor of its kind in Asia, ensuring the safety of wildlife while allowing humans to travel at high speeds. Additionally, a 370-meter-long tunnel near the Dat Kali Temple has been constructed, adding to the thrill of the journey.

Quick Facts:

  • Distance: 213 Kilometers.

  • Route: Delhi (Akshardham) -> Baghpat -> Shamli -> Saharanpur -> Dehradun.

  • Toll Tax: ₹675 for a one-way trip (₹1,010 for a return trip within 24 hours).

  • Speed Limit: Designated speed of 100-120 km/h.

The Divine India Tip for Travelers:

"If you are starting your Char Dham Yatra from Delhi, use this new expressway. It will not only save your time but also conserve your fuel and energy, keeping you refreshed for the challenging climbs in the mountains."
