Ujjain: In Ujjain, the city of Lord Mahakal—the 'Lord of Time and Death'—the daily Bhasma Aarti is the only ritual of its kind in the world where Mahadev is adorned with fresh ash (Bhasma). This Aarti is not merely a religious ritual but a symbol of the profound philosophy of life and death.
According to the Shiva Purana, Shiva is 'Aghor,' and ash is an inseparable part of His divine form.
Message of Non-Duality (Advaita): The ash conveys the message that the world is transient and the final form of every material substance is ash.
Destruction of the Ego: When devotees witness the ash being offered to Mahadev, it is considered a symbol of incinerating the 'ego' within themselves.
Emptiness (Shunyata): Ash is a symbol of purity and nothingness, the state where the soul eventually merges with the Supreme Consciousness.
Performed during the Brahma Muhurta (at 4:00 AM), this Aarti begins with the Abhishek of Mahakal using water, milk, curd, honey, and fruit juices. Following this, the Lord is magnificently adorned with Bhang (cannabis) and dry fruits. Finally, the Aarti of Mahadev is performed using ash from the funeral pyre (symbolic ash is used in current times).
It is believed that a devotee who witnesses the Bhasma Aarti of Mahakal is liberated from the fear of untimely death (Akaal Mrityu). This Aarti introduces humans to the ultimate truth of death and inspires them to live a life of fearlessness.
Seeing Mahakal's divine adornment from formless to tangible during Bhasma Aarti is a unique and supernatural experience.
