New Delhi : Lord Shiva is both 'Aghori' and 'Bholenath'. Every object used in his worship—whether it is the serpent wrapped around his neck or the ash on his forehead—teaches humanity a profound truth of life. In the worship of Shiva on Mondays, the importance of Bhasma (sacred ash) and Bilva leaves is considered paramount.
Lord Shiva applies Bhasma (Vibhuti) over his entire body.
Spiritual Meaning: Bhasma reminds us that this body is mortal and will eventually return to ashes. It is a symbol of the renunciation of worldly illusions (Moh-Maya) and detachment (Vairagya).
Scientific Basis: Bhasma closes the pores of the body, which prevents extreme heat or cold from affecting the body significantly. According to Ayurveda, sacred ash possesses disinfectant properties that protect the skin.
The worship of Mahadev is considered incomplete without offering Bilva leaves. It is said— "Tridalam Trigunakaram Trinetram Cha Triyayudham."
The Secret of the Three Leaves: These three leaves symbolize the control over the three Gunas—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Additionally, they are considered to be the forms of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (the Holy Trinity).
Cooling Properties: When Lord Shiva consumed the poison (Halahala), his body temperature increased. Bilva leaves have an inherently cooling nature, which provides a soothing effect to Mahadev’s forehead.
