In the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva narrated the significance of this fast to Goddess Parvati through the story of Charumati:
In the ancient kingdom of Magadha, there lived a humble and devout woman named Charumati. She was known for her unconditional love, deep reverence toward her elders, and devoted care for her family.
Pleased by her pure devotion, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in Charumati's dream and said:
"O Charumati, I am deeply moved by your virtuous character. On the Friday before the full moon of Shravana, observe my Varalakshmi Vrat. It will dissolve all adversities and fill your home with eternal abundance."
Upon waking, Charumati shared the divine vision with her family and neighbors. Together, the women gathered on the auspicious Friday, consecrated a sacred Kalash, adorned it as Goddess Lakshmi, and completed the rituals.
Instantly upon concluding the prayer, their households overflowed with gold, grains, fine textiles, and prosperity. Since that day, the tradition of Varalakshmi Vrat has been observed with steadfast faith.
The Sacred Pot (Kalash): A brass or silver pot filled with raw rice, water, betel nuts, and coins is crowned with mango leaves and a whole coconut.
The Divine Face: The coconut is decorated with turmeric, vermilion, jewelry, and often a silver mask depicting Goddess Lakshmi.
