Amavasya of Ashwin month is known as Pitru Visarjan Amavasya. Pitru Visarjan Amavasya is a religious program of Hindus which is celebrated with reverence in every household. A religious ceremony is organized to express reverence for one's ancestors. In Indian culture and in Hindu religion, there is a sense of respect and reverence for elders. On this day, by giving food and donations to the brahmin, the pitta gets satisfied and they go to bless their sons. Families who do not remember the date of their ancestors or if they are unable to perform Shradh on time for some reason even after knowing the date of their ancestors, then their ancestors are satisfied by performing Shradh on this Amavasya. Those who have died untimely, their Shradh can also be performed on this new moon day.
If one is not able to perform Shradh on entire dates, then he can perform Shradh (for all) only on Amavasya Tithi. Shradh performed on Amavasya Tithi is enough to please the souls of all the ancestors of the family.
This festival is also called the closing festival of Pitru Paksha. On this day, puri dishes etc. food items are kept at the door after lighting a lamp in the evening. Which means that the father should not remain hungry while leaving. Similarly, the purpose of lighting a lamp is to illuminate their path. The Shradh festival of Pitru Visarjan Amavasya can be done on the banks of a river, or lake, or even in a private residence.
