According to the Hindu calendar, the sixth day is called Shashthi. Shashti falls in both Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. Shashti comes twice in a month. Shashti has its own special significance in Hinduism. The famous festivals falling on Shashthi Tithi are Durga Puja, Sitalasthi, Skanda Sashti or Subramanya Shashthi and Chhath Puja. Lord Shiva's son Kartikeya is worshiped on the day of Shashthi.

Importance of Shashthi Tithi

Shashthi Tithi is especially important for the happiness and health of children. On this day, parents worship Goddess Shashthi and pray for longevity, health and prosperity of their children by her grace. Chhath festival and Surya Shashthi fast are organized at many places on this day.

  • Santaan Shashthi: This fast is observed for the birth of children and their long life.
  • Surya Shashthi: It is also known as Chhath Puja. In this, Sun God and Chhathi Maiya are worshipped.
  • Skanda Shashthi: It is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya. This fast has special significance in South India.

Worship method of Shashthi Tithi

  1. Bath and purification:
    Take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Sanctify the place for worship.
  2. Worship of Goddess Shashthi:
    Install the idol or picture of Goddess Shashthi and worship her. Offer them fruits, flowers, incense sticks, offerings and especially turmeric.
  3. Vrat and Upvaas:
    On this day, fasting is done and prayers are offered for the well-being of the child. During the fast, one can keep a fruit diet or waterless fast.
  4. Katha Shravan:
    It is necessary to listen or read the story of Shashthi Vrat. This gives more fruits of the fast.
  5. Donation and Dakshina:
    At the end of the fast, feed the poor and Brahmins and give donations.

Festivals associated with Shashthi Tithi

  • Chhath festival: This festival is especially celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. In this, Sun God and Chhathi Maiya are worshipped.
  • Skanda Shashthi: This festival is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya in Tamil Nadu and South India.
  • Lalita Shashthi: This festival is famous for the worship of Lalita Devi, a form of Goddess Durga.

By performing Puja and fasting on Shashthi Tithi, the child gets longevity, health and happiness and prosperity. By getting the blessings of Goddess Shashthi on this date, every kind of obstacle in life is removed.
