Amavasya and Mahadev: Why Shiva Worship Destroys All Sufferings on This Day? Discover the Deep Spiritual Mystery

New Delhi/Haridwar, February 17, 2026: In the Hindu calendar, the date of Amavasya (New Moon) holds immense significance. While it is predominantly known for ancestral worship and acts of charity, very few are aware of the direct connection between Amavasya and Lord Shiva. On this auspicious occasion of Falgun Amavasya, let us explore why worshipping Mahadev today removes the greatest obstacles from one's life.

1. The Connection Between the Moon and Shiva

According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva adorns the moon upon His forehead. In astrology, the Moon is the significator of the mind (Mana). Since the moon remains invisible on Amavasya, the human mind can often feel restless, disturbed, or heavy. When we worship 'Chandrashekhara' (Shiva) on Amavasya, He grants stability to our mind and brings an end to mental afflictions.

2. The Destruction of the Darkness of Ignorance

Amavasya is the darkest night of the month. Mahadev is the symbol of 'Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya'—the one who leads us from darkness to light. Worshipping Shiva on this day sends a powerful message: no matter how deep the darkness (suffering) in your life may be, a single ray of devotion to Mahadev is enough to vanish it.

3. The Path to Liberation from Pitru Dosha

Amavasya is the Tithi dedicated to the ancestors (Pitrus). Scriptures state that if one has Pitru Dosha in their horoscope, seeking refuge in Mahadev brings peace. Shiva is the only deity known as 'Mahakal,' the one who controls the cycle of life and death. Offering water and Belpatra on the Shivalinga today satiates the ancestors, who in turn bless the lineage with happiness and prosperity.

4. Remedy for Kaal Sarp and Shani Dosha

For those affected by the Sade Sati of Saturn or Kaal Sarp Dosha, Shiva worship on Amavasya is considered a panacea (Rambaan). Specifically, reciting the Shiva Tandava Stotram or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on Amavasya helps eliminate the adverse effects of planetary positions.

What to Do Today? (Special Rituals)

  • Deepdan: This evening, light a lamp (Diya) under a Peepal tree and in a Shiva temple.

  • Charity: Donating black sesame seeds and food grains on this day pleases both Mahadev and the ancestors.
