Sabarimala (Kerala), January 3, 2026: Preparations for the world-renowned Makaravilakku festival at the Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala have entered their final and most crucial phase. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and the Kerala State Government have intensified arrangements for the grand event scheduled for January 14. Lakhs of devotees from across the globe are expected to trek the holy hills to witness the divine 'Makar Jyothi'.
The Makaravilakku marks the most sacred day of the annual Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season.
Makar Jyothi: On the evening of Makar Sankranti, as the Sirius star (Makara nakshatra) appears in the sky, a celestial glow or flame is seen thrice on the distant Ponnambalamedu hills. This flame is revered as 'Makar Jyothi'.
Thiruvabharanam Procession: Prior to the festival, the sacred golden ornaments of Lord Ayyappa (Thiruvabharanam) are brought from the Pandalam Palace in a grand ceremonial procession. These ornaments are used to adorn the deity for the special Deeparadhana on the festival day.

To ensure a smooth and safe experience for the massive influx of pilgrims, several measures have been implemented:
Virtual Queue & Darshan Slots: To prevent overcrowding and stampede-like situations, the temple has strictly implemented 'Virtual Queue' bookings. This allows devotees to have pre-allocated time slots for darshan.
Robust Security Cover: Thousands of additional police personnel have been deployed at Sannidhanam, Pamba, and Nilakkal base camps. The entire trekking path is being monitored via high-definition CCTV cameras and drones.
Healthcare & Basic Amenities: Oxygen parlors, emergency medical centers, and purified drinking water stations have been set up along the uphill route to assist pilgrims during the steep climb.
Devotees gather not just at the main temple but also at various vantage points like Ilavunkal and Nilakkal to witness the Makar Jyothi from afar. The administration has reinforced barricades and lighting at all these designated viewing points.
The Sabarimala pilgrimage remains a unique symbol of communal harmony, as devotees also pay their respects at the mosque of Vavar Swami, a legendary friend of Lord Ayyappa, before proceeding to the main shrine.
