Shravan Vrat is a special fast observed by Vaishnav devotees. This fast is observed every month on the day of Shravan Nakshatra. It is believed that worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day brings many blessings. By observing the fast of Shravan, the blessings of Lord Vishnu always remain. On the day of Shravan fast, special consecration, puja and aarti are conducted for Lord Vishnu in temples.

Significance of Sravana Vrat

Sravana Vratham is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is one of the most popular fasts among Hindus. Its importance is highlighted in many Hindu religious texts and puranas, especially in vishnu puran.

According to legends, Sravana Nakshatra is known as the ‘Nakshatra of Lord Venkateswara’. Therefore, this day is especially auspicious in Tirumala, Tirupati. The ‘deepam’ ceremony at the ‘Oppilliappan Temple’ is well-known on this day. Special pujas and abhishekams are performed in Vishnu temples across India, particularly in the southern regions.

Why is Sravana Vrat Important?

In Hinduism, Sravana Masa is considered an ideal time to worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Pujas and rituals performed during this month are believed to be highly rewarding.

Sravana is the 5th month in the traditional Hindu calendar and is considered as holy as the ‘Karthika’ month. It also marks the beginning of the auspicious ‘Chaturmaas’ period.

Those who observe Sravana Vratham with devotion are believed to be blessed with happiness and prosperity and may attain ‘moksha’ (liberation) and find a place in ‘Vaikuntha’, the heavenly abode of Lord Vishnu.

Rituals During Sravana Vrat

  • The fasting on Sravana Vrat is similar to the Ekadashi fast. Devotees fast for 24 hours from sunrise on the day of Sravana Vratham until the dawn of the following day.
  • Consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol is strictly prohibited for those observing the Vrat.
  • The fast is broken by offering ‘naivedyam’ (food offering) to the Lord the following morning. Those who keep a strict fast should only consume liquids the next day.
  • Reciting ‘Pancha Sooktham’ or ‘Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam’ on Sravana Vratham is considered very auspicious. Lighting a ‘deepam’ in temples dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara or Lord Narayana is highly meritorious on this day.
