Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha - Second Chapter

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha - Second Chapter

Sutaji said: "O Rishis! I shall now narrate the history of those who performed this ritual in ancient times. Please listen carefully. In the beautiful city of Kashipuri, there lived an extremely poor Brahmin. Restless with hunger and thirst, he used to wander aimlessly across the Earth. Lord Shri Vishnu, who loves His devotees and Brahmins, took the form of an old Brahmin, approached the poor priest, and respectfully asked: 'O holy Brahmin! Why do you wander across the Earth everyday looking so miserable?'"

The poor Brahmin replied: "I wander across the Earth to beg for alms. O holy sir! If you know of any way to get rid of this utter poverty, please tell me."

Lord Vishnu, in the guise of the old Brahmin, said: "O Brahmin! Lord Shri Satyanarayan is the bestower of all heart's desires Therefore, you should worship Him; by doing so, a person becomes free from all miseries." After explaining the entire method of the ritual to the Brahmin, the Lord, in the guise of the old man, vanished from sight.

The Brahmin decided, 'I will definitely perform the ritual that the old Brahmin told me,' and returned home. The next morning, he woke up early, resolved to observe the fast of Shri Satyanarayan, and went out to beg for alms. That day, he received a lot of money in alms, with which he purchased the prayer materials, came home, and performed the ritual of Shri Satyanarayan along with his relatives. By doing so, the Brahmin was liberated from all miseries and became endowed with immense wealth and prosperity. From that day onward, the Brahmin started performing this ritual every single month. Similarly, anyone who performs the ritual of Lord Satyanarayan according to scriptural methods will be cleansed of all sins and achieve salvation. Anyone on Earth who performs this ritual will be liberated from all sorrows. In this manner, I have narrated the ritual as told by Lord Satyanarayan to Narada."

The Rishis then asked: "O Munishwar! We wish to hear who else performed this ritual after hearing it from this Brahmin."

Shri Sutaji replied: "O Munis! Listen to the stories of all those who performed this ritual. Once, when that Brahmin was performing the worship and ritual according to his wealth and capacity along with his family, a woodcutter arrived. He kept his firewood outside and entered the Brahmin's house{. Parched with thirst, the woodcutter saw the Brahmin performing the ritual and forgot his thirst. He bowed to the Brahmin and asked: 'O holy sir! Whose worship are you performing? What fruits are obtained from this ritual? Please tell me.'

The Brahmin replied: "This is the ritual of Lord Shri Satyanarayan, who fulfills all wishes. By His grace alone, wealth and food grains have multiplied in my house." Learning about the ritual, the woodcutter felt extremely happy Taking the holy water (Charanamrit) and eating the food, he returned to his home.

The next day, the woodcutter resolved in his mind that whatever money he earned by selling wood in the village that day would be spent on performing the excellent ritual of Lord Satyanarayan. With this thought, he placed the bundles of firewood on his head and went to a neighborhood where wealthy citizens lived. That day, he received four times the regular price for his wood.

The old woodcutter was overjoyed. He bought ripe bananas, sugar, honey, ghee, milk, curd, and wheat flour—all the necessary ingredients for Lord Satyanarayan's ritual—and came home. Then, inviting his friends and relatives, he performed the worship and ritual of the Lord with proper methods. By the influence of that ritual, the old woodcutter became blessed with wealth and children, enjoyed all worldly comforts, and finally departed for Vaikuntha (heaven)."
