Deoghar (Jharkhand): Among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the glory of Baba Baidyanath Dham is unparalleled. It is not only a sacred Jyotirlinga but also a revered Shakti Peetha. The story of Ravana’s intense penance and Mahadev’s divine compassion behind this holy shrine continues to inspire millions of devotees today.
Ravana, the King of Lanka, was a supreme devotee of Lord Shiva. He desired that Mahadev reside in Lanka forever so that his city would become invincible. With this resolve, Ravana performed severe penance in the Himalayas for many years. When Shiva did not appear, Ravana began to offer his ten heads, one by one, onto the Shivalingam to prove his devotion. Just as he was about to sever his tenth and final head, Mahadev manifested before him.
When Shiva asked Ravana to seek a boon, Ravana prayed for Mahadev to accompany him back to Lanka. Mahadev granted him a unique Shivalingam but set a strict condition:
"Take this to Lanka, but remember—if you place it on the ground anywhere along the way, it will remain fixed there forever."
The gods feared that if Ravana succeeded, he would grow too powerful and spread unrighteousness. Seeking help from Lord Vishnu, Varuna Dev (the God of Water) entered Ravana’s stomach, causing him an urgent and intense need to relieve himself. Forced to stop, Ravana handed the Shivalingam to a cowherd (who was actually Lord Ganesha in disguise). Seizing the opportunity, Ganesha placed the Shivalingam on the ground. Despite Ravana’s desperate attempts to lift it, the Lingam remained established there, true to Mahadev’s condition.
Shiva as the Physician: According to legend, when Ravana severed his heads, Lord Shiva himself appeared in the form of a Vaidya (Physician/Doctor) to heal his wounds. Hence, he is worshipped here as 'Baidyanath' (Vaidya + Nath).
The Heart Peetha: Baidyanath Dham is also considered an important Shakti Peetha. It is believed that the heart of Goddess Sati fell at this very location.
Manokamna Lingam: This shrine is regarded as the fulfiller of all desires (Manokamna).
Kanwar Yatra: During the month of Shravan, millions of devotees perform the Kanwar Yatra, carrying Ganga water on foot from Sultanganj to perform the Abhishek of the Lord.
Freedom from Suffering: Worshipping here is believed to liberate devotees from diseases, mental distress, and all forms of sorrow.
