Hoihi Soi Jo Ram Rachi Rakha: Should We Leave Everything to Fate? Discover the Answer by Shri Premanand Ji Maharaj

Vrindavan: Often, we use this famous verse from the Ramcharitmanas"Hoihi Soi Jo Ram Rachi Rakha"—as an excuse to turn away from our duties. We think, "If everything is already predestined, why work hard?" But is this truly the meaning of this chaupai? The revered saint of Vrindavan, Shri Premanand Ji Maharaj, has provided deep and clear spiritual guidance on this matter.

When Was This Said?

Maharaj Ji explains that this verse was spoken by Lord Shiva when he noticed that Mother Sati had developed a doubt regarding the true nature of Shri Ram. Lord Shiva tried his best to explain the truth to her, but when Sati Ji did not listen and set out to "test" Shri Ram, Mahadev uttered:

"Hoihi Soi Jo Ram Rachi Rakha. Ko Kari Tark Badhavai Shakha.
As kahi lage Japan Harinaama. Gaeen satee Jahan Prabhu Sukhadhaama."

Meaning: Whatever Lord Rama has already determined will happen. What good is it to prolong this matter with pointless arguments? Why prolong the discussion by worrying about the future? Having said this, Mahadev calmed down and began chanting the name Hari, while Mother Sati went to test Lord Rama to resolve her doubts.

Premanand Ji’s Message: Do Not Be a Coward!

Maharaj Ji emphasizes that interpreting this verse as a reason to sit idle like a "coward" is a mistake. He highlights two primary principles:

  1. Effort First (Pura Prayas): According to Maharaj Ji, we must first put in our maximum effort. Whether it is a professional goal or a spiritual one, we must apply all the hard work and intellect required to achieve it.

  2. Trust the Result (Phal Ki Chinta): Once you have given your 100% effort, whatever the outcome may be, accept it as the will of the Divine. This is when the verse truly applies—as a tool to maintain peace when the result is out of your hands.

Conclusion: The Union of Karma and Faith

Leaving everything to fate without making an effort is simply laziness. However, if after working hard, the results do not align with our desires, we should remember this chaupai to find mental peace. Even Lord Shiva first tried his best to convince Sati Ji (effort), and only when she refused to understand did he leave the outcome to Shri Ram (surrender).
