Papmochani Ekadashi 2026: Liberation from Unintentional Sins and the Special Grace of Lord Vishnu

New Delhi/Haridwar: Today, March 15, 2026, the holy festival of Papmochani Ekadashi is being celebrated across the country. Falling in the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month, this Ekadashi, true to its name, is believed to 'Mochan' (annihilate) all known and unknown sins of mankind. Coming just before the Hindu New Year and Chaitra Navratri, this Ekadashi offers devotees a divine opportunity for mental and spiritual purification.

Worship of Lord Vishnu’s Chaturbhuj Form

Today, rituals are dedicated to the Chaturbhuj (four-armed) form of Lord Vishnu, who holds the Shanka (conch), Chakra (discus), Gada (mace), and Padma (lotus). It is believed that meditating on this form instills stability and a sense of security in the devotee's life.

  • The Significance of Yellow: Offering yellow flowers, yellow fruits, and Saffron-mixed Panchamrit to the Lord is considered highly auspicious.

  • Mantra Power: Chanting the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" today significantly enhances mental concentration.

Why is Consuming Rice Forbidden Today?

There are both religious and scientific reasons behind avoiding rice on Ekadashi:

  1. Religious Belief: According to ancient legends, rice originated from the body parts of Maharishi Medha. Therefore, eating rice on Ekadashi is symbolically viewed as consuming a part of the sage.

  2. Scientific Reason: On Ekadashi, the moon’s position has a profound impact on water bodies. Since rice has a high water content, consuming it can lead to mental restlessness and may disrupt focus during fasting and meditation.

The Legend of Papmochani Ekadashi (In Brief)

In ancient times, an Apsara named Manjughosha arrived to disrupt the penance of Sage Medhavi. Under her charm, the sage strayed from his spiritual path. However, once he realized his mistake, he sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. Following the Lord's command, he observed the Papmochani Ekadashi fast with full devotion, which liberated him from his faults and restored his divine radiance.

The Rare Conjunction of Sunday and Ekadashi

Today is also Sunday, the day dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God). The merging of Ekadashi and Sunday further amplifies the spiritual significance of this day.

  • Special Ritual: While offering Arghya (water) to the Sun God today, add a few black sesame seeds and red flowers. This is considered an effective remedy for health and prosperity.
