Chaturdashi Tithi falls on the fourteenth date of Shukla and Krishna Paksha according to the Hindu calendar. This date has special significance from a religious and spiritual point of view. It is considered sacred for the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali. Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha is especially celebrated as "Narak Chaturdashi" and "Shiva Chaturdashi", while Shiva worship is also performed on Chaturdashi of Shukla Paksha.

Religious significance of Chaturdashi Tithi

Chaturdashi Tithi is related to Lord Shiva and his devotees. This day is considered a symbol of self-purification, meditation, and devotion. According to mythological beliefs, on this day Lord Shiva killed a demon named Tripurasura, due to which this date is also called "Tripurari Chaturdashi". Apart from this, on the day of Narak Chaturdashi, Lord Krishna killed Narakasura and freed the earth from his terror.

Method of Chaturdashi Vrat

  • Morning bath: On this day, wake up early in the morning and take a bath and take a vow of fasting with a pure mind.
  • Worship of Lord Shiva: Offer water, milk, bel leaves, and flowers on the Shivling to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva.
  • Deepdaan: Light a lamp in the evening and worship Lord Shiva and Yamraj.
  • Mantra Japa: Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
  • Bhajan-Kirtan: Listen to Shiva bhajans and stories related to Chaturdashi.

  • Trayodashi-Chaturdashi: Associated with Shiva Chaturdashi and Pradosh Vrat.
  • Narak Chaturdashi: Celebrated a day before Diwali. It is also called "Chhoti Diwali".
  • Tripurari Chaturdashi: Celebrated in memory of Lord Shiva's killing of Tripurasura.

Mythological stories

  • Tripurasura Vadha: According to a legend, on Chaturdashi Tithi, Lord Shiva defeated the demon named Tripurasura and freed the three worlds from his slavery.
  • Narakasura Vadh: On the day of Naraka Chaturdashi, Lord Krishna killed Narakasura and freed 16,000 girls from his tyranny. On this day, prayers are offered for freedom from hell by lighting lamps.

According to the Hindu calendar, the fourteenth day is called Chaturdashi. Chaturdashi falls in both Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. Chaturdashi comes twice a month. Chaturdashi has its own special significance in Hinduism. The famous festivals falling on Chaturdashi Tithi are Narak Chaturdashi, Bahula Chaturdashi, Anant Chaturdashi, Baikund Chaturdashi and Holika Dahan. Lord Hanuman is worshiped on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. There is a belief in the worship of Lord Ganesha of Anant Chaturdashi. Lord Vishnu is worshiped on Chaturdashi.
