Pradosh Vrat Tithi in 2026

Pradosh Vrat is a highly significant fast in Hinduism, observed on the Trayodashi Tithi (13th day) of both the Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha in every month. This fast is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and performing prayers and fasting on this day is believed to bring Lord Shiva's blessings. The word "Pradosh" signifies the evening period, and worship performed during this time is considered highly auspicious.

Pradosh Vrat is believed to grant progeny, health, peace, happiness, and even liberation (moksha). Devotees worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on this day and pray for the removal of all obstacles and difficulties in life.

Procedure for Observing Pradosh Vrat

1. Bathing and Purification

   • Begin the day with an early morning bath and maintain purity in mind and body.
   • Take a vow (sankalp) to observe the fast.

2. Worship of Lord Shiva

   • Perform Shiva Puja during the Pradosh period (evening twilight).
   • Offer water, milk, curd, honey, and Ganga water to the Shiva Linga.
   • Adorn the Shiva Linga with Bel leaves, Dhatura, and flowers of Aak.
   • Offer rice, sandalwood, incense, and lamps to Lord Shiva.
   • Chant the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya."

3. Bhajans and Stories

   • Sing hymns and bhajans dedicated to Lord Shiva.
   • Listen to or recite the Pradosh Vrat Katha (story).
   • Involve family and friends in the worship.

4. Fasting

   • Observe a strict fast throughout the day, consuming only fruits and water.
   • Break the fast only after performing Shiva Puja during the Pradosh period.

Types of Pradosh Vrat

Pradosh Vrat is categorized into three main types:

1. Som Pradosh Vrat: Observed on Mondays, considered extremely auspicious for Shiva devotees.
2. Shani Pradosh Vrat: Observed on Saturdays, believed to alleviate Shani Dosha (Saturn affliction).
3. Trayodashi Pradosh Vrat: Observed on every Trayodashi Tithi of the lunar calendar.

Story of Pradosh Vrat

According to mythology, during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Lord Shiva consumed poison to save the universe. To calm the effects of the poison, Goddess Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva during the Pradosh period. Since then, this day has been observed as Pradosh, and the fast is believed to bring Lord Shiva's blessings and relief from life's sorrows.
