Achyutam Kesavam Krishnam Damodaram – Glory of God

In Indian culture, the glory of Lord Shri Krishna and Lord Vishnu is described in many stotras, verses and hymns. One of these famous hymns is –

Achyutam Kesavan Krishnam Damodaran,
Ram Narayan Janaki Vallabham.

Through this verse devotees worship various forms of God.

Meaning and sentiment of the verse

  • Achyutam – One who never falls, that is, never falls nor gets destroyed. This is the eternal form of Lord Vishnu.
  • Keshavam – Who killed the demon Keshi and has beautiful hair.
  • Krishnam – Who attracts the entire world with his divine pastimes and beauty.
  • Damodaram – Whom mother Yashoda had tied around her abdomen (waist) with a rope. It reminds us of the child form and affectionate pastimes of God.
  • Ramam – Who is without any fault, Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram.
  • Nārāyaṇam – The foundation of all living beings and the universe, the protector of the world.
  • Janaki Vallabham – Sita Mata’s beloved Shri Ram.

Spiritual message

This shloka teaches us that God is one, but his pastimes and forms are many. Sometimes he becomes Yashoda’s beloved Damodar by becoming a child, sometimes he establishes religion by becoming Maryada Purushottam Ram, and sometimes he protects the universe by becoming Vishnu.

When devotees recite this stotra, their mind remembers all the pastimes and qualities of God. This remembrance gives them devotion, faith and peace.

“Achyutam Keshavam Krishnam Damodaran, Ram Narayanam Janaki Vallabham” is not just a hymn but the entire essence of the glory of God. It tells us that no matter what form God takes – He is our protector, support and true guide.
