The festival of Phulera Dooj is considered as the auspicious and highest day. This festival is celebrated in all regions of North India, especially this festival is an important day in the regions of Braj, Mathura and Vrindavan. This festival is completely dedicated to Lord Krishna. Phulera Dooj is marked on the Shukla Paksha Dwitiya in the month of Phagun in the Hindu calendar. Phulera Dooj falls between the festival of Vasant Panchami and Holi. On the day of Phulera Dooj, the temples of Lord Krishna are specially decorated and the idol of Lord Krishna is shown preparing for the upcoming Holi. On this day thousands of devotees visit the famous temple of Vrindavan, Shri Banke Bihari temple. Shri Banke Bihari Temple is decorated with flowers.

Literally Phulera means ‘Phool’ which refers to flowers and “Dooj” means the second day of the lunar fortnight. As the name suggests, flowers play a central role in the celebration of this festival. Therefore, on this day, Holi is played with colorful flowers with Lord Krishna. This festival brings happiness and joy in the lives of people. This festival is a reminder to be thankful for the blessings of Mother Nature.

Story of Phulera Dooj

It is believed that Lord Krishna had been busy with his work for a long time. Due to which Lord Krishna was not able to meet Radha Rani. Radha Rani started living very sad. Due to the unhappiness of Radha Rani, there was an adverse effect on nature, Lord Krishna, seeing the condition of nature, went to meet Radha Rani to remove her sorrow and displeasure. When Lord Krishna met Radha Rani, Radha and the gopis were pleased and there was greenery all around again. Shri Krishna plucked a flower and threw it on Radharani. After this Radha also threw flowers on Krishna by plucking it. Then the gopis also started throwing flowers at each other. Holi of flowers started everywhere. All this happened on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Falgun month. Since then this date was celebrated as a festival known as Phulera Dooj.
