1. Tulsi Leaves (Holy Basil)

Tulsi leaves are strictly prohibited in the worship of Lord Shiva. According to Puranic legends, Tulsi was Goddess Vrinda in her previous birth, married to the demon Jalandhar. Since Lord Shiva slaved Jalandhar to restore cosmic balance, Tulsi leaves are never offered to Mahadev.

2. Kumkum or Sindoor (Vermilion)

You should never apply vermilion or kumkum to a Shivling. Vermilion is traditionally associated with marital status, feminine energy, and worldly beauty. Lord Shiva, on the other hand, is an ascetic (Vairagi) who smears his body with sacred ash (Bhasma). Only sandalwood paste (Chandan) should be used to make a Tripundra on the Shivling.

3. Water from a Shankh (Conch Shell)

While the conch shell holds immense importance in the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, bathing a Shivling with water from a Shankh is forbidden.
