Rules and Code of Conduct of Kanwar Yatra

Kanwar Yatra is a unique symbol of unwavering faith and devotion towards Lord Shiva. Every year in the holy month of Sawan, lakhs of devotees join this journey, which is not only a religious ritual but also a journey that gives peace to the soul and comfort to the mind. This journey is an emotional and spiritual experience of carrying the holy water of Ganga in Kanwar to Shiva temples. But to keep this holy journey smooth and peaceful, it is very important to follow some rules and code of conduct. Let us understand these rules and know how we can make this journey even more meaningful.

Rules of Kanwar Yatra

  1. Physical and mental purity
Before starting the Kanwar Yatra, the devotee should be physically and mentally pure. Take a bath and wear clean clothes and keep positive thoughts in mind. This journey is of devotion and dedication, so there should not be any kind of anger, hatred or negativity in the mind.
  2. Barefoot journey
Traditionally, Kanwar Yatra is done barefoot. It symbolizes humility and sacrifice towards Lord Shiva. Though it can be physically demanding, it is an intense experience for the devotees, which deepens their devotion.
  3. Purity of Kaanvad
The Ganga water filled in the Kaanvad is considered extremely holy. It should never be placed on the ground. Always keep the Kaanvad at an elevated place and ensure that it does not come in contact with any impure place.
  4. Fasting and Satvik Food
Many devotees observe fast during the yatra or consume only satvik food. It prohibits the consumption of meat, fish, egg, garlic, onion, etc. This rule helps in keeping the body and soul pure.
  5. Chanting Shiva Mantras
One should chant mantras of Lord Shiva, such as "Om Namah Shivaya", during the yatra. This not only keeps the mind calm but also makes the yatra more pious.

Code of Conduct of Kanwar Yatra

  1. Harmony and Peace
Kanwar Yatra is a symbol of devotion and peace. Avoid any kind of violence, quarrel or indecent behavior during the journey. Treat other devotees and local people with love and respect. This journey gives us the message of unity and brotherhood.
  2. Respect for the Environment
It is the duty of every devotee to keep the Ganga River and the Yatra route clean. Do not throw plastic, garbage or other material here and there. Protect the environment to maintain the purity of Ganga water.
  3. Follow Local Rules
Follow the rules made by the administration during the journey. Do not violate traffic rules and avoid creating obstacles on the travel route. This will not only make your journey smooth but also prevent inconvenience to other people.
  4. Help and Cooperation
If a devotee is in trouble during the journey, help him. This journey teaches us the importance of selfless service. Whether it is distributing water or showing someone the way, even small acts please Lord Shiva.
  5. Moderation in music and celebration
Many times devotees use loud music or DJ in excitement. But make sure that it does not cause disturbance to others. Keep the music level moderate and give priority to devotional bhajans.

The Kanwar Yatra is not just a religious journey; it is an experience that gives us a chance to look within ourselves. There is sweat, fatigue and challenges at every step, but with every step our devotion to Lord Shiva grows stronger. When we walk barefoot, our relationship with Mother Earth deepens. When we carry Ganga Jal in a Kanwar, that water is not just water but becomes a symbol of our devotion.

I once saw an elderly devotee who was exhausted but had a strange peace on his face. I asked him, “Baba, how do you do such a difficult journey?” He said smilingly, “Son, when Bholenath is in the mind, the tiredness of the feet does not matter.” This thing of his touched my heart. This is the real value of Kanwar Yatra – that devotion, that faith, which helps us overcome every difficulty.

Kanwar Yatra is a pilgrimage that brings us closer to Lord Shiva and also teaches us the lessons of discipline, tolerance and love. By following the rules and code of conduct, we can make this journey even more sacred and meaningful. Come, let us all together make this journey a celebration not only for ourselves but also for the society and the environment in this Shravan.
