Shailputri is the first of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. That's why Shailputri Devi is called Durga as the first incarnation or the first Durga. Shailputri means daughter of the hills. She was named 'Shailputri' because of her birth as a daughter in the house of the mountain king Himalaya. Shailputri Devi is worshiped and worshiped on the first day of the festival of Navratri. In the worship of this first day, the yogis establish their mind in the 'Mooladhara' chakra. This is where his yoga practice begins.

Shailputri Mataji has a trident in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left hand. In her previous birth, she was born as the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, then her name was 'Sati'. She was married to Lord Shankar. The importance and powers of the first Shailputri Durga among the Navadurga are infinite.

Shailputri Devi is also known as Hemavati. According to the Upanishads, Goddess Parvati had crushed the pride of various gods. On this the gods unanimously accepted him as 'Shakti'.

Shailputri takes care of all the devotees who take refuge in the Himalayas for yoga, sadhana, austerity and rituals. They are especially worshiped in mountainous areas like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Purvanchal, Nepal etc.

Prarthana or Prayer of Shailaputri :

Vande Vanchhitalabhaya Chandrardhakritashekharam।
Vrisharudham Shuladharam Shailaputrim Yashasvinim॥

Meaning: "I pay my VANDANA/obeisance to the DIVINE MOTHER SHAILA-PUTRI, who bestows upon the choicest boons to the devotees. The moon in the crescent form is adorned as the crown on Her forehead. She is mounted on the bullock. She holds a lance in her hand. She is Yashasvini - the CELEBRATED MOTHER DURGA".
